Good advice with the comfort zone. I would advise you to look into the brain a bit more though, it is more complicated than lizard brain and neocortex. At the simplest level, there is also what is referred to as Mammalian brain, and the neocortex is not quite homogenous. But that is simplistic as well.
The best explanation I know is Behave by Sapolsky, really explain what is going on without devolving into the excessive details that seem to plague most neuroscience works.
