We are Not adapted to Money
Hunter-gatherer tribes shared everything. The few possessions belonged to the whole tribe. Selfishness was non-sensical: you either thrived as a tribe or died as individuals.
It took the invention of the State and agriculture to create inequality through individual possessions. This created the need for an effective way to exchange possessions.
We used many things as money, from seashells to precious metals to marked paper to today’s invisible electronic currency. Yet the medium is secondary to the effect of money. Our whole society has evolved around it: to have money is a means to fulfill all of your unconscious monkey’s needs: survival, social belonging, status, reproduction, value.
Thus money has become not a tool, but an end goal in itself. One that is like a CandyCrush game: there is no way to win because there is no end. We work for more and more money, but it is never enough. Because other people always have more or might have more. And even worse, we don’t really know how to play the game of obtaining money. We are tricked into believing that money is acquired by playing by the rules, conforming. But if that were so, shouldn’t most people be rich?
So we toil and suffer for money. For enough money, for more money, for the illusion of money, for the security of money.
We cannot recreate the moneyless hunter gatherer society. It is likely it could not function with billions of people. But we can remember money is not an end. It is a tool in our society. A tool for freedom.
You should strive to have enough money for the lifetsyle you want. But first assess what that actually means. Likely you don’t need to be a millionaire to achieve it.
And then work to get that money. Be realistic and brave. Most likely you won’t get it by conforming. But by taking risks and doing what most people are not doing. Remember: most people cannot afford to live how they would like.
